“Prophecies”

“Prophecies” is the newest creation by the artists of A’lante. Inspired by the prose poetry of Khalil Gibran, whose book “The Prophet” has captured readers’ imaginations since 1923, A’lante’s work imagines a mythical dialogue with Gibran’s fictional prophet, using centuries-old flamenco music and dance as a common idiom. “Prophecies” invites audiences to consider the role of tradition in our 21stcentury digital society, while digging into the very roots of the flamenco art form to unearth a new creation. “Prophecies” earned A’lante Flamenco the Austin Critics’ Table Award for Best Dance Ensemble in...

The Red Shoes – a flamenco fairy tale

THE RED SHOES: A FLAMENCO FAIRYTALE Live the dream…until it becomes a nightmare! A’lante Flamenco Dance proudly presents “The Red Shoes: A Flamenco Fairytale,” an innovative new flamenco interpretation of the deliciously dark fable by Hans Christian Andersen. With choreography by Olivia Chacón and live music directed by Isaí Chacón, the production explores the attractions and dangers of giving in to temptation. Once the world of control and reason is left behind to embrace ecstasy, chaos takes over… DARK SOUNDS The distinctive “sonidos negros” (dark sounds) that characterize flamenco music provide the inspiration for this suite of dances that embrace tradition while tweaking the typical. Be prepared for a new vision of flamenco! September 15: “The Red Shoes”, FlamencoFest San Antonio, Cameo Theater, San Antonio, TX October 26, 27: “The Red Shoes” with “Dark Sounds”, Rollins Studio Theater, Long Performing Arts Center, Austin, TX Tickets on sale at the Long Center  thelongcenter.org...

Flamenco: Straight, No Chaser

Have you ever enjoyed a fine whisky? Sometimes its fiery, sometimes sweet, but always strong, complex and with a great flavor. We believe that good flamenco should be the same—no gimmicks, no trendy fusions, just straight sabor, music and dance that hits hard, then lingers in your mind, ears, and eyes for hours afterward. The Inner Circle at Flamencura

As your eyes adjust to the candlelight, you can just make out a circle of men and women, sitting close, shoulder to shoulder. Fingers strum guitars, hands clap byzantine rhythms, heads bend, listening intently to the gravelly voice of a lone singer. The woman next to you suddenly rises from her seat, her face transfixed in a mask of concentration, fingers snapping a morse code intelligible to everyone but you. She raises her arms and stamps her foot… the night has just begun.” The Inner Circle at Flamencura–be a part of...
